How To Film Details | Wedding Filmmaking Behind The Scenes

I had the pleasure of filming a wedding at Glacier Canyon Lodge in Wisconsin Dells. I got there around 9 AM, and it was one of those rare times when everything went smoothly right from the start. The parking was right in front of the main doors, so I could easily haul all my gear straight to the reception space. The layout was ideal— the reception and ceremony areas were side by side, which made the rest of the day a lot easier.

Once I was all set up, I teamed up with the photographer to capture some of the day’s special details. We focused on the little things that add so much to the story, like the rings, flowers, shoes, perfume, and earrings. I don’t always need these shots for the video, but I like to grab them just in case they add that extra touch. We even took the bride’s sparkly dress outside to let the sunlight really make it shine. For the smaller items, we found a spot where the sunlight streamed through the windows—perfect for getting those detailed shots. Working closely with the photographer like this helps make sure we don’t miss a thing, and it’s one of the reasons I love what I do. Stay tuned for more behind-the-scenes looks into my life as a wedding filmmaker!

Takeaways Now That It’s All Done

I realized after editing this entire series that I should have used a different set up for the gear I was using. While the camcorder was fantastic, I should have removed the glimmer glass in front of it. When you are moving around, the glimmer glass is much more noticeable than when I have it just tripoded. That and I just kept on rolling since it would be easier for me to sync later in post, well, this resulted in me having an incredible amount of content to sift through instead of just recording what was good content to use. Next time, I will be using a wireless mic that is plugged directly into the camcorder, so everything is synced already and I can save a huge amount of time later in post and it’ll be easier for the person behind the camera as well not having to roll almost the entire day.
