One of the top questions I get asked is: Do I back up my footage? The answer is a solid yes—I backup everything. In fact, I’ve been archiving since 1993, and I still have all my mom’s camcorder tapes! This collection is one of my most prized possessions. Backing up footage isn’t just about keeping files safe, it’s about preserving memories, moments, and emotions that you’ll want to relive forever.
So how do I do it?
Step 1: Immediate On-Set Backup
After a shoot, I immediately back up the raw footage to two separate external hard drives. This ensures that the files are saved in two locations right off the bat—if something happens to one drive, the other is still intact.
Step 2: Cloud Storage
In addition to the physical drives, I also upload everything to a cloud storage platform. The beauty of cloud storage is that it provides remote access and another layer of safety, even if all local drives fail. Your wedding footage is stored securely and accessible from anywhere, which means that it’s protected even in the case of accidents or drive failure.
Step 3: Long-Term Archiving
Once the project is complete, I archive everything on a separate server dedicated to long-term storage. This keeps past wedding footage organized and easily retrievable if couples ever want to revisit their memories or request additional edits down the road. It’s my way of ensuring your memories last a lifetime.
